Staying Healthy During Hot Summer Days

With the temperature reaching three digits it is important to take some basic precautions against illness and dehydration. It is very easy to become busy and forget to hydrate properly. Proper hydration is best done by drinking water. While any liquid such as soda, coffee and power drinks are better than no liquids, nothing replenishes your body like water. Not only is water the only true calorie and sodium free drink, it’s what your body needs on a cellular level.

Dehydration can cause irritability, dizziness, nausea, mental confusion, forgetfulness, muscle tremors and in severe cases, unconsciousness or death. By drinking enough fluids on a daily basis you not only prevent dehydration but gain several other health benefits.

By giving your body the proper amount of fluids you increase the elasticity and health of your skin, allowing a more youthful appearance. Appropriate fluid intake also aids digestion and improves kidney and liver function.

A good way to determine if you’re not drinking enough fluids is the appearance of your urine. If urine is a dark color or has a strong odor, these may be signs you need to drink more liquids. A healthy urinary output will be a semi-transparent yellow and nearly odorless.

Another summer necessity is UV protection. All skin damage is cumulative, your skin can’t repair itself completely so all injury is in a sense permanent harm. Even if you are exposed to direct sunlight for only 15 minutes a day, your skin may be subject to excessive bruising, tearing, thickening and wrinkling as you age. You may also develop skin discolorations and brown spots.

By using UV protection your skin will retain its elasticity, ability to mend and youthful appearance. Proper care should also be taken of your vision. Excessive UV exposure can cause cataracts or deterioration of vital tissue. Everyone, including children, should wear sunglasses measured to block no less than 99% of UV400 (400 nm is the wavelength of UVA radiation.)
