A Child's Prayer

As I try to learn who I am and find my way,
I will make mistakes from day to day.
Even if I test your patience, please understand,
Children need soft words and a gentle hand.

I will grow stronger with loving directions,
Instead of harsh scolding corrections.
All I want is to be held safe and sound,
To be heard and know you want me around.

Let me lean on you as I figure out
What life and this world are really about.
I trust you to keep me safe while I grow.
I rely on you to teach me all I need to know.

Show me the person you want me to be,
By doing the right things where I can see.
Let your actions and words be my guide.
I wish to have your eyes fill with pride.

I want you to know every time you see me,
How earnestly I wish to be,
Loved, accepted and understood by you.
I love, accept and understand you, too.
